• Sights you mustn't miss
Denver’s collection of bustling ethnic enclaves offer diverse attractions, and the city’s impressive municipal buildings include its State Capitol as well as the ultra-modern Denver Art Museum. The Black American Museum and Heritage Centre explores the contribution made by black American pioneers in the Old West, and the Chamberlin Observatory is a historic landmark. Denver Zoo boasts Bear Mountain and a Pioneer Train, and the natural beauty of Washington Park is surrounded by historic homes.

• Fun things to do
A must-do here is a visit to the totally-traditional Lakeside amusement park, with its old-fashioned rides giving a journey back in time to a far less commercial era. Waterworld and the massive Elitch Gardens are its 21st century equivalents, and the Butterfly Pavilion is great for family visits. Touring the city’s highly regarded breweries is fun, and the Bovine Theatre’s comedy nights shouldn’t be missed. The Lower Downtown district is Denver’s nightlife hub, with enough clubs, pubs and bars to keep everyone happy after dark, and Capitol Hill district is party central for the city’s sub-culture and student population.

• Wining and dining
Denver cuisine is based on ‘western’ ingredients such as beef, buffalo, trout and rattlesnake spiced with green chillies, and the Mexican influence is felt all over the city’s restaurants. Ethnic eateries are popular, with Thai and Vietnamese favourites found in every price range and style. International cuisines are as varied here as in most large US cities, and Denver’s oldest restaurant, the upsacle Buckhorn Exchange, has been the haunt of the rich and famous since Teddy Roosevelt ate there in 1905.

• Day trips
The foothills of the Rockies are just 12kms from the edge of town, venture a few hours beyond into snowy ski areas in winter and flowery meadows during the summer months. The Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver’s most spectacular outdoor concert venue, is just half an hour from downtown and hosts everything from classical music concerts to rock and heavy metal. Winery tours take in vineyards clinging to the slopes and marked wine trails cover some of the best-known.
