Springfield, Illinois is a city steeped in American history. Situated along the iconic Route 66, the city is best known for its connections to Abraham Lincoln. History buffs flock to Springfield year round to find out more about the former President. The cities vital role in the Civil War is an added bonus.

It will come as no surprise that Springfield's attractions and special events are focused on the famous President Lincoln. He's an iconic American figure who draws millions of people a year to Springfield. Lincoln's final resting place, family home and family church are all found in the city.

Wherever you stay you'll encounter history. Choosing to stay at the Howard Johnson Inn and Suites will put you close to Lincoln's Tomb. If you're more interested in the President's living years, stay at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel which is right near the Lincoln Home Visitor Centre.

Summer visitors can enjoy the new Living History program that transports you back in time with re-enactments carried out by people dressed in period garb. You can catch Lincoln telling stories on the back porch of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum if you're lucky.

Returning to the current year, Springfield has plenty to offer. Knight's Action, Springfield's two theme parks, are exciting for all the family. The combination of water slides, go-karts and batting cages will tire you out during the day, so spend the evening relaxing in front of the big-screen at the Route 66 Drive-In Movie Theatre. Reserving a room at the Courtyard by Marriott or the Sleep Inn Springfield means you won't have far to get home at the end of the night.

Make sure you visit Maldaners, the oldest restaurant on Route 66, serves chops, racks of lamb and quails. For a fantastic restaurant without the historic significance, try the local favorite, Xochimilco. Specialising in Mexican cuisine, you'll be served authentic tacos, enchiladas and more at a reasonable price.
