St. Augustine is known as the “Oldest City in the Nation” – as it is the oldest European-established continuously occupied settlement in the USA. It was founded way back in September 1565 by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, a Spanish admiral. It was the capital city of Spanish Florida for around 200 years and was also the capital of the Florida Territory until this designation was given to Tallahassee in 1824.
This city is a great tourist attraction, with a lot of historic romance, a charming old world character and lots of art galleries, shops and restaurants.

Key Attractions

Take the time to walk around the lovely city centre, as you will be able to see the historic architecture and get a sense of the European feeling of this very old settlement. You might even want to take a walking tour or an Old Town Trolley Tour.
Another popular attraction is the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, which is the old fort that was built by the Spanish in the late 1600s. The Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum is also an interesting glimpse into the past, complete with costumed historical interpreters.
If you want to learn a bit more about the spooky side of the city, you can go on one of the Nightly Walking Tours, which will tell you tales of ghosts, scandal, murder and much more.

Having Fun

St. Augustine has an incredible amount of festivals throughout the year, from the Night of Lights Festival to the music and barbeque of the Rhythm and Ribs Festival to the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival. If you visit during any of the many great events throughout the year, the festival vibe will make your trip even more enjoyable.
For a great night out, there is always the St. Augustine Pub Crawl, which will take you around to some of the best bars and pubs in the city. Or, if you just want to get a drink you have many options including the Milltop Tavern, The Oasis, the King’s Head British Pub, McCleans Pub and many more.

Shopping

The historic shopping district is St. George Street, where you are sure to find a number of fun gift and souvenir shops. Also, St. Augustine has a lot of outlet shops where you can buy name brand clothing at discount prices. Head to the St. Augustine Premium Outlets or the Belz Factory Outlet World.
The Old City Farmer’s Market is a lot of fun, offering fresh produce, flowers, crafts, jewellery and art in a bustling market setting.

Nearby

From St. Augustine it is a short drive to Marineland, which is a nearby Florida town that is home to the themepark Marineland of Florida. This aquatic theme park features several sea creatures including dolphins and a number of interactive experiences.
