Berlin’s troubled history since the end of WWII has resulted in its unique, multinational redevelopment into one of Europe’s great cities. Its famous nightlife is as trendy as it was before the war, and its grand, traditional architecture contrasts with the eerie remains of the infamous Berlin Wall. Tourism infrastructure including hotels is world-class, as befits the capital of Germany.
Sights you mustn't miss
Berlin’s historic centre of Mitte is full of heritage sites, museums and art galleries, and City West is home to the Charlottenburg Palace as well as the famous Unter den Linden boulevard, the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag parliament building. Once independent towns and now part of the Berlin metropolis, Spandau and Reinickendorf are charming, spacious remnants of old Berlin, Museuminsel holds five world-class museums and the Berlin Wall remnants and Checkpoint Charlie are must-sees.

Fun things to do
Berlin’s nightlife is as amazing nowadays as it was in the years before WWI, with clubbing in its 200 nightclubs centred in the east of the Mitte district. Berlin has a wide choice of theatrical, musical and operatic delights available throughout the year. Berliners love festivals and parades and the all-time favourites is the pre-Lenten Karneval and the June Karneval der Kulturen celebrating all the city’s varied ethnic groups.

Wining and dining
Eating out in Berlin is relatively inexpensive compared to most European capitals, and there’s a great choice of traditional cuisine as well as dishes for all over the world. Head to City West or Mitte for upscale restaurants, or to any of the ethnic districts for authentic dining. Cocktail bars are trending here, with Berliners liking to meet up with friends before heading on to dinner or a nightclub.

Day trips
Potsdam lies within the Berlin metropolitan area and gives a breath of fresh air with its four spectacular parks, all of which are UNESCO-listed sites for their grand, historically-significant mansions. Just to its south is Werder, famous for its sour cherry wine and fruit orchards, and 14th century Bernau is 20kms away with its medieval city walls and stunning Gothic churches.
