There’s much more to present-day Detroit than car assembly plants, with the city now shooting up the cultural scale for its new attractions including world-class museums, art galleries, events, renovated historic enclaves and expanding theatre district. Its many hotels cater for all tastes and pockets and are found all over the city.
• Sights you mustn't miss
Detroit’s downtown International Waterfront set along the river is its pride and joy, and the city has a number of pre-depression era skyscrapers as part of its rich architectural heritage. Many of its old warehouses have been converted into loft apartment blocks, but still tell of the city’s industrial past. The Art Deco Guardian and Fisher buildings and downtown’s Roman Baroque Wayne County Building are well worth seeing, and a visit to star-shaped Fort Wayne recalls the region’s Civil War history.

• Fun things to do
Detroit is famed for its Motown sound, rock and modern techno music, belting out from its multitude of bars and clubs every night of the week. For a less frenetic night out there are theatre, opera and concert performances at venues all over the city. A Great Lakes cruise gives breathtaking views, and the city’s MGM, Motor City and Greektown casinos offer gambling, dining and entertainment. The underground arts scene is huge here, with 80 galleries set in former industrial spaces and featuring local and international artists’ works.

• Wining and dining
Pizzas, hotdogs and potato chips and ginger ale are just some of Detroit’s culinary contributions to American food. In addition, Greektown’s eateries serve authentic Mediterranean dishes and spicy Mexican food is found in its ethnic quarter of Mexicantown. Hamtramck boasts Polish cuisine, Lebanese delights are found in Dearborne district and the classic Detroit deep-dish pizzas are found across the city. Fine dining is at its best in the downtown and midtown areas.

• Day trips
A short drive to the city’s Dearborn outer suburb brings vintage car enthusiasts to the Henry Ford Museum and its Automotive Hall of Fame, set in the historic surroundings of Greenfield Village. For architecture and buffs and gourmets, an hour’s drive leads to the Lake Erie town of Toledo, and shopaholics should head for Troy with its amazing collection of speciality designer stores in one massive mall. Close by is beautiful Lake St Clair’s Metropolitan Beach.
