Famed for the Beatles, football clubs, the Grand National horse race and the best nightlife in the Northwest, Liverpool has reinvented itself as a cultural city, with its hotels now welcoming tourists from all over the world. Once one of Britain’s wealthiest ports and a major shipbuilding centre, it’s one of the UK’s most vibrant, exciting cities for music, shopping, dining, nightlife, museums and art galleries.

Sights you mustn't miss

Liverpool’s Royal Liver Building is the iconic symbol of the city’s historic shipbuilding industry. The legendary ‘Liver Birds’ sit atop its towers, one facing to the sea and the other to the city.
The former teeming Albert Dock is now a magnet for trending locals, and the Walker Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool are famed for gritty representations of the city’s earlier glory.
The Mersey Maritime Museum tells of great ships and the workers who built them, and ‘Paddy’s Wigwam’, the city’s modernist Irish Catholic cathedral, is a rare sight.

Fun things to do

Albert Dock is famous for its comedy nights, and the Royal Court Theatre is equally-loved for its shows featuring local and national comedians.
Music pubs, bars and clubs are set around Concert Square and Wood Street, with Le Bateau and Krazy House the least dressy and the most fun.
A must-do is a trip on the Mersey Ferry, made famous by the Beatles, and Albert Dock is home to several Beatles museums and exhibitions.

Wining and dining

Although there’s no shortage of upscale eateries and less exalted venues serving international and British foods, pub grub is an all-time favourite here. The city centre and Albert Dock hold the best options, and Lark Lane in Aigbuth district has several choice picks.
As in the rest of the North West, the traditional fish and chip supper is another favourite, either eaten in or as a take-out.

Day trips

The coastal town of Formby is under an hour away with its sand dunes, nature reserve and popular beach, as is the lively seaside resort of Southport.
In under an hour you can reach the desolate moorlands of Lancashire with their remote pubs and tiny hamlets, and Manchester is just an hour away.
