Sights you mustn't miss

Set on its lovely, curving bay, the city of Palma is the island’s cultural hub, with its history and heritage going back as far as Roman times. The historic Old Quarter has shady, narrow, streets lined with quaint historic homes and shops and its charming squares are home to churches and the city’s cathedral. Overlooking the streets is ancient Bellver Castle, secure within its medieval walls and holding classic sculptures and magnificent views.

Fun things to do

Beach life, water sports, nightlife and shopping expeditions are all favourites here, and portside Paseo Maritime is the entertainment hub with its discos, dance clubs, bars and pubs.
Walking the old city’s walls with their fine views is a relaxing experience, and Place del Mercat with its Art Nouveau architecture is good plce for people-watching. Taking a traditional bath in the 10th century Banys Arab bathhouse is a fun experience for visitors and locals alike.

Wining and dining

Tapas bars, café bars, fine dining restaurants, local restaurants and mid-range chain outlets are all here, catering for every foodie taste and pocket.
The island’s ultra-fresh daily seafood catches are used to great effect along with the fresh farm produce from the interior.
Dinner is eaten late here, with many restaurants staying open until after midnight, and lively nightlife focused on the beach bars and clubs.

Day trips

The volcanic interior of the island is stunning, with the plains leading up to the Tramuntana mountain slopes with their traditional villages, just an hour away from the coast.
For a day on a practically deserted beach, head for the traditional fishing village of Deia, an hour’s drive from Palma and famous as the home of poet and author Robert Graves.
