Richmond, Virginia is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was settled in 1607 and began as a simple trading post for tobacco, furs and hides. It is one of the oldest cities in the USA.
It is known as a “City of Neighbourhoods” because each area of the city has its own unique style and identity – almost like a collection of small towns. These neighbourhoods include the Museum District and Carytown, West End, The Fan, Downtown, Northside, Southside, Southwest and East End.

Key Attractions

Belle Isle, located in the middle of James River, has a lovely mountain biking trail with great views of the river and the falls. Also, another popular destination is the Historic Downtown area, which has cobblestone streets, beautiful architecture and a lot of history.
Monument Avenue, which stretches from downtown to the West End, has statues of a number of Confederate heroes including St. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
Richmond is also home to a number of great museums, including the American City War Centre, the Science Museum of Virginia, the Black History Museum, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, the Virginia Fine Arts Museum and the Children’s Museum of Richmond.

Having Fun

If you are dining out, many of the best restaurants in Richmond will be found in the historic area of Shockoe Bottom. There are many choices, whether you are looking for an All-American diner, a Sushi restaurant, Vietnamese cuisine or Italian food.
Richmond has a fantastic live music scene and the local clubs offer a great selection of indie, rock, blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, alternative, hardcore, metal, punk and much more. Check out The Camel, the Canal Club, Gallery 5, The National and Strange Matter for some great live music events. Also, the Rare Olde Times Irish Pub is a popular hangout, which as a welcoming informal and friendly setting.

Shopping

One of the best places to shop is Carytown, which has lots of cool and quirky art galleries, antique shops and clothing stores – as well as some great restaurants and cafes.
There are also a few malls to choose from in Richmond, such as the Chesterfield Towne Centre, the Regency Square Mall, the Short Pump Town Centre Mall and the Willow Lawn Mall. If you are shopping for antique furniture, the best place to head is the Antique Village Mall in Mechanicsville.

Take a day tour around the Monticello Wine Trail, visiting some of the 200 wineries in Virginia and tasting their delicious creations.
Also, Richmond is close to Luray Caverns, which allows you the chance to explore fascinating 10 story high underground caves that are millions of years old.
Another popular day trip is to the amusement park Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, which has some of the best rollercoasters on the East Coast of the USA.
