Sights you mustn’t miss

A visit to River Street is a must when visiting Savannah area. Located in the river port, shop in more than seventy shops, galleries, and see this old thriving area has been restored. It’s a terrific place to grab a bite to eat, a cup of coffee, lunch or dinner. And being located in a “sailors world”, you can find a tankard of brew at one of the pubs.
Visit Wormsloe Plantation Historic Site, for a peak into the history of the 1700’s and plantation life. Visit old historic gravesites, the original Jones plantation house as well as a museum housing some very interesting artifacts of the times.
Another haunting and historic place to visit is the Bonaventure Cemetery, open from 8am-5pm.This 150 year old cemetery sits high overlooking the Wilmington River, and as you browse the gravesites and old moss covered trees, you will surely enjoy that it isn’t a night tour.

Fun things to do

Take one of the “walking ghost tours”. There are no shortage of tours to choose from, and no shortage of ghosts or their stories in Savannah. For the history lesson alone these are worth a few of your hours.
Another great way to see and learn about “Old City” Savannah is by taking a horse drawn carriage ride through the old town streets. Again, you will learn more about the city from your driver/guide.

Wine and Dine Tips

Who hasn’t heard of Chef Paula Deen of the Food Channel on TV? If you have or have not, you still should plan on dining in her restaurant The Lady & Sons downtown on Congress St. Paula is world famous for her down home southern “comfort food”, so when visiting the deep south, taste what its all about here.
Another experience in Southern Cuisine is the Olde Pink House, where southern inspired food is served in an 18th century “haunted house”. This restaurant is favored by locals and visitors alike, and has been featured on the “Food Channel”.
If visiting “family style”, a yummy experience in dining is Mrs. Wilkes’ Boarding House on W. Jones Street. Experience old time deep southern cooking, served “family style”.

Day Trips

If you’re vacationing in Savannah, a side trip to Historic Charleston Island is easily a day trip. You get to explore the old historic streets, architecture, in Old Town, Waterfront Park and the French Quarter.
For the golfers, you have probably been chomping at the bit for an excuse to visit Hilton Head, and play on one of the famous courses.
