St. Louis is known as the “Gateway to the West” because it was the last stop where the pioneers would stay before they journeyed further into the West. Also, there are a number of great bars in the area, such as the friendly and down to earth Hair of the Dog, the Sub Zero Vodka Bar, Halo Bar and the Venice Café, which features nightly live music.St. Louis also has a fantastic food scene and when you are visiting, you should take the chance to try some of the local foods including Barbequed Pork Steaks, Toasted Ravioli, Maull’s Barbeque Sauce, Provel Cheese and Slinger (a place of hashbrowns, eggs, hamburger, chili and cheese).
Shopping
One of the best places for funky and hip shopping is the Delmar Loop, which is where many of the University Students like to hang out. Also, the downtown area is home to a lot of cool local shops as well as furniture stores.For a great bargain, check out Hullabaloo, which is one of the biggest retailers of used clothing in the USA – offering very cool vintage finds.
The largest mall in the city is St. Louis Galleria and you can also find great shopping at the West County Mall, South County Mall or the St. Louis Mills Shopping Centre.
Nearby
For a great scenic day trip, you can take a drive along the Great River Road, stopping at some of the many antique shops along the way. It is also possible to take a short day trip to Jefferson City, the state capital.Another nearby attraction is the Cahokia Mounds, which is the largest pre-Columbia city that exists north of Mexico. It is an official UNESCO World Heritage Site and it offers an interesting glance back into the past.
