One of the largest churches in the world dedicated to the Virgin May, the Basilica Papale (or Papal Basilica) of Santa Maria Maggiore is near the Termini Train Station in central Rome and an excellent site to explore first thing in the morning before the crowds start to build. Inside you'll find 5th century mosaics, a reliquary said to contain a piece of the crib that once held the baby Jesus, an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary, and the tomb of Saint Jerome.
Rome is so packed full of visual treasure it's easy to overlook some. In particular make sure you see one of Michelangelo’s most beautiful sculptures, the Pieta. It's just inside the entrance of St Peter's Basilica and often visitors walk quickly past it. Michelangelo’s Pieta was carved in the late 1490s.
