Sights you mustn’t miss
Visiting Miami always calls for a visit to Miami Beach, if not for some sun and water activities. Experience a walk down South Beach, some people watching, shopping and a Mojito sitting on the outside deck of a restaurant, snacking on fresh seafood ceviche.A visit to the Miami Seaquarium, located smack dab on the causeway between Miami and Key Biscayne is special, because here you can enjoy the outdoor aquarium and its creatures of the sea, only possible in this tropical environment.
Fun things to do
Vacationing with youngsters, a visit to the Zoo Miami is always a great day out, and probably a good break from the sun and beach. If the children are old enough, why not look into some jet skiing, or maybe a day fishing charter.
Another activity world famous is Scuba Diving on the Keys, where some of the best “wreck diving” in the world is available. If you’ve never Scuba Dived, don’t fret, they offer one-day discovery diving tours for young and old. You never know if you like it until you try it.
Wine and Dine Tips
As you can imagine, there is no shortage of great restaurants in Miami or nearby Miami Beach, so don’t worry, you won’t starve. Why else do thousands of people flock to Miami each year for the awesome Miami Food and Wine Festival?Because of the major Cuban influence to the world of food here, you owe it to your taste buds to try some authentic Cuban cuisine. There are many smaller “mom& pop” Cuban restaurants around town, and suggestions from hotel staff as well as locals can be rewarding. We like to suggest a couple choices to look at, though not in expensive, they are award winning.
De Rodriques Cuba on Fifth Avenue has taken his Cuban menu to new and exciting heights, from Cuban sandwiches for lunch to seven fresh seafood ceviches, and so much more.
Pubbelly Sushi is an exciting yet simple Asian inspired modern restaurant serving everything from grilled octopus, BBQ pork to short ribs and sauerkraut.
Traveling with the family can be a challenge finding restaurants that actually welcome children. The big name and celebrity restaurants can be a challenge, but there are some excellent family restaurants to choose from, and they are fun. The Big Pink is one of those, located on South Beach, serving everything from breakfast dishes, to burgers, pizza and even home made TV dinners on special sectioned trays.
The Big Cheese is another favorite for families, serving large portions, family style, and prices reflect family style for your wallet.
Day Trips
Take a drive down the Florida Keys, for the view, fishing or maybe Scuba Diving. Each ‘key” is unique and worth a stop for a few photo’s and a Rum Runner at the local hangout. Remember, the Keys were the favorite hangouts of Earnest Hemmingway, and you can visit his “memorial” bar/hangout on Key West.Take a drive or tour bus to the Florida Everglades, and board one of the boat tours for an exciting adventure in the “Glades”. Be sure to keep your hands in the boat, because there are large teeth in those alligator choppers.
A tour of both Monkey Jungle and Jungle Island (used to be Parrot Jungle), are each excellent day trips. See the exotic animals of Florida within a humane environment. When was the last time you had your photo taken with a large beautiful parrot on your shoulder, or a Spider Monkey in your arms?
Where to stay
You can stay the night at the Embassy Suites Hotel Miami Airport. This stylish and affordable hotel puts you close to public transport links. For those with their heart set on a vacation spent soaking up the sun, the Miami Beach Resort and Spa provides the perfect backdrop.
Reserve a room at the Hampton Inn Miami Beach Brickell or the Courtyard Marriott Adventure Mall to be in the middle of it all, close to museums, theaters and restaurants. Favorite among high-end travelers is eco-friendly Epic Hotel.
